Semester 2, Day 2
This was originally planned to be posted after Day 1, and also was going to be a lot more “in-depth”, but I forgot most of what I was planning on putting in here Monday night…
Well the semester has started again, with a wave of new modules, new lecturers, and new excuses not to get out of bed in the morning… I wouldn’t mind just staying in bed all day and not having to get up except for food/bathroom and gaming. But, unfortunately, that sort of thing is detrimental to academic success.
The main thing that has been going on hasn’t been the lectures, it’s been the ever-so-changing timetable, that just won’t say the same from one day to the next. 2 weeks ago, our Fridays were free. Then we had a lab put on Friday afternoon from 4-6pm. We complained. Then another lab was moved to Friday 11-12. We complained even more. Now the earlier lab is on Monday morning 10-11, while the later one is still there.
Another example would have to be this. I checked my timetable at 2am on Monday. Lecture at 11. Grand
- Wake up at 9am, check timetable just in case. Lecture at 11. I get ready to leave and check the timetable at a quarter to 11 just to confirm what room I’m in. NO LECTURE AT 11?! Seems that only within an hour or to of the lecture’s start, it gets moved (turns up Tuesday at 1pm). Not the most helpful of changes, especially as almost all of us could have done with an extra hour of sleep!
Get a text from the parent mid-afternoon asking me to come back in the evening. Seems she was out for dinner with colleagues from abroad, so she needed me to watch Aoife. Wasn’t that big of a deal, except that I was due in at 9 in the morning… So, meet up with Tim and Aoife in town after they have dropped Elaine off, and we head back to Dunboyne. I really only ended up “watching” Aoife for about an hour, and even then she was in bed, so it wasn’t much.
Oh, and one thing I can pretty much confirm: Anytime I attempt to cook Goodfella’s Solos pizzas, at least one of them always ends up getting dropped, topping-side down, on the floor/counter or ends up falling through the oven shelf onto the bottom… I’d buy proper pizzas, but they don’t do the BBQ Chicken in a regular pizza size…
Wake up at 7. Leave at five past. Miss express bus. Arrive in college dorm at ten to nine. Databases lecture at 9. I lie down on the bed and think “Meh.” - in fairness, it’s not like the first lecture is ever that important. It’s only ever an intro to the module. Besides, I can do SQL quite handily. Although you kinda have to if you run any sort of web software that uses a database…
After the second lecture, Declan (castle) made the decision to go to the canteen for food. And as is student nature, about ten others tagged along. It was actually not a bad idea though - got to experience Phyliss’ panini counter before she retires at the end of the month. It’s a pity, she’s become such a legacy in DCU amongst the students, and at one point had a regular spot in CAMPUS… Let’s help those “Phyliss Phund Raisers” raise enough cash for a decent going-away gift!
One good thing did come out of all this hubbub - had I not been at home, I wouldn’t have been watching TV, and thus I wouldn’t have learned from the ads during Ross Kemp in Afghanistan, that this week’s Euromillions is a guaranteed jackpot win. That is to say, if no-one wins the jackpot, the prize money rolls down to 5 numbers and 1 Lucky Star, and gets shared amongst those winners
Go buy your ticket now, before the rush crashes the network and you can’t get one!
