» Can’t log out of WP? WTH?

Posted by TheChrisD on Tuesday the 13th of January, 2009 at 7:53:39pm UTC

Alright I just had a very weird thing happen a moment ago. I was logged in on my backend writing stuff and upgrading comment files to use 2.7 features, when I noticed that I was logged out on the frontend. Still logged into backend so tried to log out failed from the backend, and failed. WTF?

It was a really weird thing, given I’m logged in on one side but not the other. Trying to go manually to the login page just brought me to the dashboard, and logging out wasn’t working.

A quick Google search did the trick, since some people on WP.org were mentioning how they couldn’t log out. Now although the thread I picked up was about people having a lack of a working logout link on their theme, another guy did have my problem:

I’m having the same problem with logout. When clicking the logout link in the upper right corner of the control panel, I get a screen that reads “You are attempting to log out of (website name)”
Then there’s hypertext that says Please Try Again. That link takes you back to wp-admin. If I place my cursor in the address bar and hit enter, I get a different screen that reads “You are attempting to logout of (website name). Then it reads “Do you really want to logout?” Here ‘logout’ is hyptertext and adds www.sitename.com/wp-login.php?action=logout&wpnonce=(numbers)

This has been my workaround… to just place cursor in address bar, hit enter, then click the hyptertext that says logout.

This doesn’t appear to have anything to do with my theme as it only calls the wp-login.php script which is nowhere near my theme files.

Why on earth it screwed up like that, I have no idea. I just hope this isn’t a recurring thing…

Never had this happen to me – maybe a rather obscure cookie bug? Glad you got it fixed though – not being able to log out is a huge security risk.

This happens to me also. I find I need to close all other internet windows first. I mean ones related to my blog.

If this is your first time commenting here, I'll need to approve of it first. If I do, then the floodgates are open (not literally!) for you to comment unhindered in the future.

If you were so hungry you ate your "comment cookie", then I'll need to approve your rant, and give you another cookie. Go put it in the biscuit tin, padlock it shut and throw away the key!

Gravatars are enabled, so show us your mug!

Links are automatically "dofollowed" after two days, giving me time to kill the spam! With that in mind, any comment with 3 links or more will need my explicit approval.

Since this post is about a month old, if your comment is caught by the spamhammer, it will be immediately spawn-raped and won't get a chance to respawn. So play nice!

Name - needed because we can't exactly be having random anonymous comments now, can we?

E-mail please. Will not be sold on to a spam company. Promise.

Website URL, if you have one. But you're on the Internet, so of course you do! Right...?

Your comment, obviously.
